Howard & Judy Rosen

Howard and Judy grew up about 60 miles apart.  Even though their lives crossed in many ways, they didn’t meet until 1998 when Howard placed his first (and last) online ad.  Judy’s response was one of over 1,000 Howard received, but as soon as Howard read Judy’s reply he knew he had met his match.

Both Howard and Judy grew up in families who valued their Jewish roots and were active in their respective congregations. Both of their fathers were presidents of their synagogues and lead by example, not merely words.  Their love of travel has been highlighted by many tours that emphasize Jewish history and culture.  Their home is filled with reminders of their numerous trips and especially their Jewish roots.

Howard has worn many hats at Temple Solel.  In fact, he calls himself the utility infielder for the Temple.  He has been VP of Development, served on the Budget and Personnel Committees, the Interim Rabbi Search Committee and as Co-Chair of the Settled Rabbi Search Committee.  Howard is currently serving his second stint on the Board of Trustees and is the Interim Treasurer.  Together Judy & Howard have helped fund several trips for our Religious School students, including trips to Selma, Alabama, New York City and Los Angeles.

Judy and Howard have three married sons and five grandsons

A Conversation with Heart: Judy & Howard Rosen’s Journey at Temple Solel

What does being named this year’s Solelebration Honorees mean to you?
Temple Solel has been our religious home since we moved to Phoenix  We have made many close friends here.  While we have focused our efforts on the youth and young families of our congregation, we have come to realize Temple Solel has so much more to offer.  While we never expected to be recognized nor honored, being chosen as this year's honorees holds a special place in our hearts.

How and when did you first become involved with Temple Solel and local philanthropy?
Before we even moved to the Phoenix area, we asked our rabbis back in St. Louis if they had any suggestions as to a new congregation that would meet our needs.  Temple Solel was at the top of their list.  While we did "temple shop" once we got here, we immediately felt at home at Solel. We sought out various Jewish organizations when we first arrived trying to find the best fit for our vision.  We found several, but have limited our focus and efforts on three.

What has been the most rewarding part of your volunteering involvement?
That's an easy one.  For the past 2 years we have been meeting with the children of the pre and confirmation classes to discuss our philosophy of G-d and religion.  This past year one of the students asked, "What if you don't believe in G-d?"  Our response was "Just wait...you will."

What advice would you give to someone thinking about getting more involved in the Jewish community?  Don't wait.  Do it.  There are many opportunities and more needs than can be met.  What are your passions?  What gets you energized?  We guarantee that there is a Jewish organization that can use your talents and your skills.

What do you hope for the future of Temple Solel and its next generation?
Of course we want to see it continue to thrive for many generations.  We hope to be a small part of that.  We hope our focus on youth and young families will help draw new members to the Temple, but just as importantly, give our current congregation reasons to continue supporting Temple Solel.

What’s your favorite song from the 1960's? Or memory?
Judy's favorite song from the '60's is "Hey Jude."  It's even the ring tone on her phone.  Howard's favorite memory is Woodstock.  He was among the 460,000 attendees.

Is there a particular project or initiative you’re especially proud of?
As we have said, we are focused on youth and young families.  We believe in putting our money where our mouth is.  We are committed to help the congregation attract and grow this demographic and will continue to focus our efforts in this area.
